St. Mary's roots are in the German Catholic farmers who began settling in the area before 1850.

Behms

Michael and Kunigunda Wagner were married in Hausen, Germany in 1846. They immigrated to the United States and settled in Fremont Center in 1847.

In her letters back home she wrote of the building of the 1864 church .

Adam and Elizabeth Behm were both born in Bavaria, Germany.

They came to Lake County about 1857.
  Wilhelm and Margaretha Tekampe.

Both Wilhelm and his brother, John came to America in 1857 sponsored by the already established John Tekampe family and worked as farm laborers until they could buy their own land.
